Minor Issues You Can Manage at Home

These are not emergencies and can usually wait for a regular appointment, but a few simple steps will keep you comfortable.

Soreness After an Adjustment

Mild soreness for a few days after getting braces or an adjustment is normal. Stick to soft foods, rinse with warm salt water, and use over-the-counter pain relief. Acetaminophen is preferred, since anti-inflammatory medications can slow tooth movement. The tenderness fades quickly as your mouth adjusts.

Irritation From Brackets or Wires

If a bracket or wire is rubbing the inside of your cheek or lip, dry the area and cover it with a piece of orthodontic wax, available at any drugstore. This protects the soft tissue while your mouth gets used to your appliance.
